Is This Trek Right for You?
A two day trek is a good middle option between a day visit and a longer jungle expedition.
It may suit you if:
- You want more time in the rainforest than a one day trek.
- You want to experience one night of jungle camping.
- You have basic fitness and can walk on steep or uneven trails.
- You are comfortable with heat, humidity, mud and simple camp conditions.
- You understand that wildlife sightings cannot be promised.
- You are willing to follow the guide’s decisions about the route and river.
Consider a shorter trek if you do not want to camp or have concerns about fitness, balance or mobility.
Consider a three day trek if you want more walking time and two nights in the rainforest.
You can compare the available Bukit Lawang jungle trekking packages before choosing.
What You Will Experience
This trek combines guided rainforest walking with one night at a riverside camp.
During the two days, you may experience:
- Rainforest trails inside Gunung Leuser National Park.
- Opportunities to observe orangutans and other wildlife.
- Explanations about forest plants and the local ecosystem.
- Fruit and meal breaks during the trek.
- One night at a basic jungle campsite.
- Breakfast surrounded by the sounds of the forest.
- A shorter activity on the second morning.
- River tubing back toward Bukit Lawang when conditions are suitable.
The experience can change from one departure to another. The guide chooses the route based on the group and current conditions.

2 Day Jungle Trek Itinerary
The itinerary below is a guide. Exact times and routes may change.
Day 1 Rainforest Trekking and Jungle Camping
Your guide will collect you from your guesthouse or meet you at the agreed point in Bukit Lawang.
Before entering the forest, the guide will explain the trekking plan and the rules for visiting Gunung Leuser National Park.
The trek normally begins around 9.00 in the morning.
You will follow rainforest trails while the guide looks for signs of orangutans and other wildlife. The guide will also explain plants, trees and parts of the forest ecosystem.
Possible wildlife includes Sumatran orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons, hornbills and monitor lizards. These animals are wild, so every encounter is unpredictable.
There will be time for breaks, fresh fruit and lunch.
In the afternoon, the group continues toward the campsite. The pace and exact route depend on fitness, weather and trail conditions.
At camp, you can rest while the team prepares the evening meal. The camp is beside the river, but entering the water should always depend on the guide’s advice and current conditions.
Dinner is prepared at camp.
You will spend the night in a simple jungle sleeping area with camping equipment provided by the team.
Day 2 Morning Experience and River Return
The second day begins with breakfast at camp.
Depending on the route and current conditions, you may continue with a shorter morning walk or spend time around the camp and river area.
There may be another opportunity to observe wildlife, but sightings are never guaranteed.
When the guide considers river conditions suitable, the group returns toward Bukit Lawang by traditional river tubing.
Large rubber tubes are connected for the journey and controlled by the river team.
If the water level, current or weather is unsuitable, the return arrangement may need to change. Follow the guide’s instructions.
Under normal conditions, the trek finishes in Bukit Lawang at approximately 1.00 to 2.00 in the afternoon.
Do not arrange a flight or other important departure too close to the expected finish time.

- Personal expenses.

What the Jungle Camp Is Really Like
The campsite is basic. It is not a hotel or a luxury camping experience.
You will sleep in a simple covered jungle camp with a mattress and mosquito net. The setup is designed to provide basic protection while keeping the experience close to the forest.
Facilities are limited.
Toilet arrangements are basic, and there is no hotel style bathroom. Ask the team for the latest camp details if this is important to you.
The camp may be beside a river or stream. Whether swimming or washing is suitable depends on the location and the guide’s assessment.
Bring only what you need for the night in a small backpack. Larger luggage should remain at your accommodation in Bukit Lawang, subject to storage availability.

Meals and Dietary Requirements
The package includes lunch, dinner, breakfast and fresh fruit.
Meals are prepared by the trekking team. The exact menu may vary.
Tell the team about vegetarian requirements, allergies or other dietary needs before booking. A request must be confirmed rather than assumed.
Bring any essential personal food or medication that your dietary or medical needs require.
Wildlife and Responsible Orangutan Viewing
Gunung Leuser National Park is part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.
The rainforest provides habitat for Sumatran orangutans and many other species.
During the trek, you may encounter:
- Sumatran orangutans.
- Thomas leaf monkeys.
- Long tailed macaques.
- Pig tailed macaques.
- White handed gibbons.
- Hornbills.
- Monitor lizards.
This is only a list of possible wildlife. It is not a promise of what you will see.
Orangutan Sightings Are Never Guaranteed
Orangutans move freely through the forest.
A guide can look for signs, listen for movement and choose an appropriate route. The guide cannot control where the animals go.
More time in the forest creates more time for observation, but no ethical operator should guarantee a sighting.
Rules Around Orangutans
Every wildlife encounter must happen on the animal’s terms.
During the trek:
- Do not feed orangutans or other wildlife.
- Do not touch animals.
- Do not chase or call wildlife.
- Keep the distance instructed by your guide.
- Do not block an animal’s path.
- Keep food and personal items secure.
- Take all plastic and rubbish out of the forest.
- Follow the guide’s instructions at all times.
Difficulty and Fitness
The two day trek has a moderate difficulty level.
Rainforest trails can be steep, uneven, humid, muddy and slippery. Conditions may become more demanding after rain.
You should have basic fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours with breaks.
Tell the team before booking if you have:
- Mobility concerns.
- Balance problems.
- A recent injury.
- A medical condition affected by heat or physical activity.
- Concerns about sleeping at a basic camp.
The team can explain whether this trek is suitable or suggest a shorter option.
Children and Beginners
Beginners may be able to join if they have reasonable fitness and understand the camp conditions.
Suitability for children depends on age, fitness, weather, trail conditions and the guide’s assessment.
Contact the team before booking for a child. Do not assume the trek is suitable for every age.
Weather and Route Changes
Bukit Lawang is beside a tropical rainforest, so rain can fall at any time of year.
Rain may make the trails muddier and more slippery. It can also affect the river level and return arrangement.
The guide may change:
- The walking pace.
- The route.
- The campsite.
- The time spent on the trail.
- The river tubing plan.
These changes are made according to current conditions and the needs of the group.
Check the latest local conditions before travelling, even if you visit during a relatively drier month.

Returning by River Tubing
River tubing is a popular way to finish the trek.
The group sits on connected rubber tubes while the river team guides them toward Bukit Lawang.
Tubing is included in this package when conditions allow.
It cannot be guaranteed regardless of weather. Heavy rain, water level or a strong current may require the plan to change.
Your guide’s assessment takes priority.

What to Bring
Pack lightly and use a small backpack.
Bring:
- Walking shoes with good grip.
- Lightweight clothing.
- Long trousers or other suitable leg protection.
- One change of clothes.
- Rain protection.
- Swimwear.
- A small towel.
- Insect repellent.
- Sunscreen.
- Personal medication.
- A waterproof bag or cover for electronics.
- A camera if wanted.
- Personal toiletries.
- Any essential dietary items.
Ask the team whether anything else is needed for current weather or trail conditions.
Plan Your Arrival in Bukit Lawang
Plan to arrive in Bukit Lawang at least one day before the trek.
The morning start leaves little room for delays from Medan or Kualanamu Airport. Arriving earlier also gives you time to check in, prepare your backpack and confirm the meeting point.
Accommodation before and after the trek is not included in the standard package.
If you need transport, you can arrange a private transfer from Medan to Bukit Lawang.
Ask your accommodation whether large luggage can be stored while you are in the forest.
