5 Days Wilderness Jungle Trek Bukit Lawang

320€ / person

Spend five days and four nights exploring the rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park from Bukit Lawang. This extended jungle trek combines multi day rainforest hiking, wildlife observation, four nights of simple jungle camping, freshly prepared meals, and river tubing on the return journey.

The 5 Day Wilderness Jungle Trek is our longest regular trekking option and is designed for active travellers who want to spend several consecutive days inside the rainforest. Orangutans and other wildlife move freely in their natural habitat, so sightings are possible but can never be guaranteed.

5 Day Jungle Trek Overview

The 5 Day Jungle Trek Bukit Lawang is designed for travellers who want a longer rainforest experience than the shorter 2 and 3 day trekking packages.

Over five days and four nights, you will follow different jungle trails through Gunung Leuser National Park with experienced local guides. The journey includes wildlife observation, rainforest trekking, riverside camping, meals prepared by the trekking team, and time to learn about tropical plants and the surrounding ecosystem.

Spending several days in the rainforest gives you more time to experience changing trails, campsites, river areas, and wildlife activity. However, all wildlife encounters happen naturally. Orangutans and other animals are never guaranteed to appear.

This trek is best suited to active travellers, nature lovers, photographers, and anyone comfortable with several consecutive days of hiking and basic jungle camping.

Detailed Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Enter the Rainforest and First Jungle Camp

The trek begins from Bukit Lawang at around 9:00 AM. Before entering the rainforest, your guide will explain the planned route, trail conditions, safety guidelines, and responsible wildlife observation practices.

You will then enter Gunung Leuser National Park and begin walking through the tropical rainforest. Along the trail, your guide will look for signs of wildlife and help you observe animals that may be active in the surrounding forest.

Depending on natural conditions, you may encounter Sumatran orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, long tailed macaques, gibbons, hornbills, tropical birds, reptiles, insects, and other rainforest wildlife.

Your guide will also introduce you to the rainforest ecosystem and explain some of the plants traditionally known and used by local communities.

Around midday, the group will stop for lunch and fresh tropical fruit before continuing toward the first campsite.

In the afternoon, you will arrive at a simple jungle campsite where you can rest beside the river and enjoy the surrounding rainforest. Dinner is prepared by the trekking team before your first night in the jungle.

Day 2: Deeper Rainforest Exploration

Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest and enjoy breakfast at the campsite before continuing the trek.

The second day takes you further through different sections of the forest. The trail may include uphill and downhill sections, muddy paths, uneven ground, river areas, and dense tropical vegetation depending on current conditions.

Throughout the day, your guides will continue looking for wildlife while explaining animal behaviour, tropical plants, and the rainforest environment.

Because wildlife moves freely through the forest, every trekking day is different. Some sections may be active with monkeys, birds, or other animals, while other sections may be quieter.

The group will stop for fresh fruit and lunch during the trek before continuing toward the second campsite.

After reaching camp in the afternoon, you can rest beside the river and enjoy the jungle surroundings. Dinner will be prepared by the trekking team before spending your second night in the rainforest.

Day 3: Full Day in the Rainforest

After breakfast, continue exploring the rainforest on another full day of trekking.

The route takes you through different jungle environments and gives you more time to experience the biodiversity of Gunung Leuser National Park. Your guide will continue looking for orangutans and other wildlife while explaining the forest ecosystem and traditional local knowledge about rainforest plants.

Trail conditions vary throughout the journey. Some sections may involve steep climbs, descents, muddy ground, river crossings, or slippery paths, particularly after rain.

The trekking pace will be adjusted according to trail conditions and the ability of the group.

Fresh fruit and lunch are served during the day before continuing toward the third campsite.

In the afternoon, settle into camp, rest beside the river, and enjoy dinner prepared by the trekking team before your third night inside the rainforest.

Day 4: Quieter Jungle Trails and Fourth Camp

Day four gives you another full day to explore the rainforest before beginning the return journey the following day.

After breakfast, continue along jungle trails with your guides. The exact route may vary according to weather, trail conditions, river levels, and the pace of the group.

During the trek, there will be opportunities to stop, listen to the forest, look for wildlife, and learn more about the plants and animals that form the Gunung Leuser ecosystem.

By this stage of the journey, you will have experienced several different sections of the rainforest and the changing conditions that come with multi day trekking.

The group will stop for fruit and lunch before continuing toward the final campsite.

After arriving at camp, enjoy your final evening inside the rainforest. Dinner will be prepared by the trekking team before spending your fourth and last night in the jungle.

Day 5: Final Jungle Walk and River Tubing

Wake up for your final morning in the rainforest and enjoy breakfast at camp.

After packing the camping equipment, you will begin the final section of the trek. This provides another opportunity to observe the rainforest and look for wildlife before leaving the jungle.

Lunch is provided during the day according to the route and timing.

The group will then make its way toward the river, where the guides prepare traditional river tubing for the return journey toward Bukit Lawang.

Large rubber tubes are securely connected together and guided along the river by the trekking team. The tubing journey offers a relaxing change of pace after several days of walking through the rainforest.

You will arrive back in the Bukit Lawang area during the afternoon. The exact finishing time depends on the trekking route, trail conditions, weather, river conditions, and the pace of the group.
